Is anyone else feeling just about
giddy with excitement at the arrival of fall in New York City? September
is such a tease – one day it’s hot and humid, and the next it’s the perfect
autumn afternoon. We’re ready for the weather to turn completely – and for
the leaves to turn too!
But there’s one great thing about Septembers – and that’s getting
back in the swing of things and back to school! There’s nothing quite
like the first few weeks of September and the anticipation they bring.
Beginnings are so exciting, and we can’t wait to see all that the rest of
the year brings.
We have started off the new school year strong at Wise Wonder.
It is our first full week, and we love watching the kids get settled and
comfortable in our cozy tree house. More than that, we love witnessing
the pride they feel in their abilities, and are looking forward to seeing how
much they progress by June.
But we’re getting ahead of ourselves!
Wise Wonder’s focus is on academics, but we also love giving kids a
chance to tap into their creative sides. Each week, we have an art
project that correlates with our theme – and it’s definitely a highlight for
the little ones.
Our theme this week? Family!
We compiled the appropriate
materials and got to work. Our project
this week focused on each child’s individual family. We continued our Wise Wonder squared art
tradition with the use of tools such as cookie cutters, paint, stamp pads, and
popsicle sticks. The cookie cutters were
used to design the houses, while the popsicle sticks added a bit of texture and
included each child’s name. And the
family members themselves? They were
created using fingerprints. The kids loved dipping their fingers in the
stamp pads and creating their family members independently. Their favorite part was picking out each
color – depending on that particular family member’s favorite, of course.
As a finishing touch, we added
trees with fingerprint leaves. And voila
– the scene was complete! Our students
could not wait to show their caregivers the finished product. We love the way art and creativity excite and inspire children – and, as always,
feel grateful we get to be a part of it.
